Practice fundamentals daily

Scales, long tones, rudiments. This is what college auditions hear first.

Get more instruction and stage time

Private lessons with a specialist. Audition for Regionals and All-State. Play in as many ensembles as you can.

Go beyond your instrument

Learn piano, take music theory, practice sight-singing and sight-reading. Most programs test these.

Record yourself

Listen back, then ask teachers and musicians for honest feedback, and use it.

Rehearse the audition

Play your pieces for people. Prepare contrasting styles, sight-reading, and scales.

Know what you're signing up for

A music degree is full-time: hours of practice, early theory classes, constant study.
